SAP BTP Trial Account and Business Application Studio: Setup Guide

Create a free SAP BTP trial account, run the ABAP trial booster, keep the service key safe and open SAP Business Application Studio to create your first dev space.
An SAP BTP trial account is a free cloud sandbox for practising ABAP Cloud, RAP and SAP Fiori development. Setting it up takes two jobs: creating the trial account with an ABAP environment, and opening SAP Business Application Studio (BAS), the browser-based IDE for Fiori and full-stack apps on BTP.
What the trial gives you
• A global account, a subaccount, a Cloud Foundry organization and a space, created for you on first login.
• Boosters : guided wizards that create and configure services in a single run.
• SAP Business Application Studio, which is subscribed automatically on newly created trial accounts.
Step 1: Create the trial account
• Open the SAP BTP trial page and register with your SAP Universal ID.
• Click Enter Your Trial Account to reach your trial global account.
• On first access, choose a region: pick US East (VA) . Wait a few minutes while the global account, subaccount, organization and space are provisioned.
• Click Continue .
Step 2: Run the ABAP trial booster
• On the global account page, open Boosters .
• Search for Prepare an Account for ABAP Trial and click Start .
• The booster creates a service instance and a service key for your ABAP trial user. The key lives inside that service instance, so you can return to it later.
• When the booster reports success, download the service key and keep the file. Eclipse with ABAP Development Tools (ADT) uses it to connect to your ABAP system.
The service key holds credentials. Do not share it, paste it into chats or commit it to Git.
Step 3: Open SAP Business Application Studio
• In the BTP cockpit, open your subaccount and go to Services → Instances and Subscriptions .
• Find SAP Business Application Studio and click Go to Application . The BAS welcome page opens in a new tab.
If you get an error there, usually on an older trial account, add the subscription yourself:
• Open your trial account and select your subaccount.
• Choose Services → Service Marketplace and search for SAP Business Application Studio.
• Open the three-dot menu on the tile, choose Create , fill in the details and click Create . BAS is now subscribed to your subaccount.
Step 4: Create your first dev space
• On the BAS welcome page, click My Dev Spaces to open the Dev Space Manager.
• Click Create Dev Space , enter a name and choose a type. SAP Fiori fits UI work on top of an OData service; Full Stack Cloud Application fits CAP projects.
• Wait until the status shows RUNNING , then click the dev space name to open the IDE.
A common first exercise for ABAP developers: build a RAP service in Eclipse ADT, then use SAP Fiori tools in a SAP Fiori dev space to generate a Fiori elements app on top of it.
Key takeaways
• Choose US East (VA) when the trial asks for a region on first login.
• The Prepare an Account for ABAP Trial booster creates the ABAP service instance and service key in one run.
• Download the service key and keep it private; ADT needs it to connect.
• BAS opens from Instances and Subscriptions; subscribe from the Service Marketplace if it is missing.
• Pick the dev space type by the job: SAP Fiori for UI apps, Full Stack Cloud Application for CAP.
