PP/DS Setup Matrix Missing in the Resource Master? How to Fix It

Why the Setup Matrix field is missing in /SAPAPO/RES01 under Time-Continuous Capacity, the one work center setting that brings it back, and what the matrix does.

You open a resource in /SAPAPO/RES01 to assign a setup matrix, and the field is not there under Time-Continuous Capacity. The usual cause is one setting in the work center: the APO resource type. Here is the fix, followed by why the setup matrix matters for embedded PP/DS scheduling.

The symptom

In the Resource Master ( /SAPAPO/RES01 ), the path Time-Continuous Capacity → Planning Parameters shows no Setup Matrix field. Without it, planners cannot assign the matrix that drives sequence-dependent setup times.

Root cause: not a single-activity resource

PP/DS shows the Setup Matrix field only when the resource is a Single-Activity Resource . The type comes from the APO resource settings of the work center capacity. A resource of another type is not offered the setup matrix assignment.

The fix, step by step

• Open the work center in change mode with CR02 ( CR01 when you create a new one; CR03 only displays).

• Enter the plant and the work center.

• On the Capacities tab, double-click capacity category 001 .

• Open the APO Resource settings.

• Set Resource Type to Single-Activity Resource and save.

• If your landscape needs it, regenerate or re-transfer the PP/DS resource so the change reaches it. This depends on how your integration is set up.

Check the result

Open /SAPAPO/RES01 again and go to Time-Continuous Capacity → Planning Parameters . The Setup Matrix field is now available for maintenance.

What a setup matrix does

A setup matrix stores the transitions between setup groups: the setup time and setup cost of switching the resource from one product (or setup group) to the next. When PP/DS schedules orders on the resource, it reads the matrix and adds the right setup duration to each changeover. Setup groups describe the state of the resource; the matrix gives the price of moving between states. Without it, PP/DS works with fixed or simplified setup times, and schedules drift away from what the shop floor can do.

A paint line shows the idea:

• Between similar shades: little cleaning, short setup.

• From a dark colour to a light one: thorough cleaning, long setup.

With that data, the PP/DS optimizer and scheduling heuristics prefer RED → RED → RED → BLUE → BLUE (one changeover) over RED → BLUE → RED → BLUE → RED (four changeovers).

Why it is worth maintaining

• Realistic capacity: setup consumes real resource time, so capacity no longer looks freer than it is.

• Fewer changeovers: less machine downtime, higher throughput and better OEE.

• Finite scheduling you can trust: promise dates hold and schedule adherence improves.

• A stronger optimizer: it can weigh setup time and setup cost against utilization, sequence and order lateness.

The gain is largest in high-mix and make-to-order plants where changeovers need cleaning or long setups: chemicals, paints and coatings, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, plastics, packaging and automotive components.

Key takeaways

• The Setup Matrix field in /SAPAPO/RES01 appears only for a Single-Activity Resource.

• Set the type in CR02 : Capacities tab, capacity category 001 , APO Resource, Resource Type.

• Make sure the change reaches the PP/DS resource, then check Time-Continuous Capacity → Planning Parameters.

• The matrix turns setup groups into real setup times and costs, which the optimizer uses to sequence orders.
